Samuel H. Schreckengost, Sr., 90, of Manor Township, died Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Ridge at Heritage Meadows.
Born July 17, 1935, in Kittanning, he was a son of the late James and Jennie (Rosenberger) Schreckengost.
He was a member of Emmanuel (Heilman) Lutheran Church. For 46 years, Sam faithfully served the people of Manor Township, first as a police officer, then as a township supervisor. Most notably, he was the first police officer to patrol The Cadet. In fact, “Big Sam”, the iconic statue at The Cadet, was named after him. He was the oldest living member of the Manor Township VFD, with 65 years of service. Sam also served as a past president of the “Old Timers”. Known to have loved keeping busy, he enjoyed mowing grass, woodworking, and being among people. He was the owner of J&S Salvage in Garretts Run, a co-owner of the Manor Inn for 20 years, and a co-owner of the Firehouse Bar for 24 years. He also owned many area rental properties.
Sam is survived by his wife, Janie (Kline) Schreckengost; his children: Rose (John) Colwell, Keith (Cheryl) Shaffer, Samuel (Chris) Schreckengost, Jr., Tammy Brice, Cindy (Tim) Walker, Barry (Danna) Shaffer, and Homer (Kelly) Schreckengost; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Kayla and Lacy Shaffer; brothers: Cecil, Jim, and Homer Schreckengost; sisters, Anna Mae Dunmire, Mary August, Violet Daniels, and Betty Fry; and a son-in-law, David Brice.
Friends will be welcomed from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, at Welch Funeral Service, LLC, 1032 Fourth Ave., Ford City, where services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, with Pastor Eric Damon officiating.
