Claire M. Schaffer, R.N., 94, of Ford City, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013, at ACMH Hospital, East Franklin Township.
Born June 7, 1918, in Ford City, she was a daughter of the late Stanley K.R. and Margaret (Miller) Schaffer.
Claire graduated from Ford City High School in 1936. She went on to Allegheny General Hospital, where she received her nursing degree, and was the president of the Class of 1939. She was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh, and did graduate studies at Penn State University.
Claire was employed as an operating room nurse at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital. She was then an industrial nurse at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company Works No. 4. During World War II, Claire served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a 1st Lieutenant, and was the supervising nurse for plastic surgery operating rooms in El Paso, Texas. After the war, Claire went to work as a school nurse for Armstrong School District, from which she retired after 35 years of service at Ford City High School. She also spent two summers in Canada as a personal nurse for the Mellon family of Pittsburgh banking renown.
Claire was a member of the Allegheny General Hospital Alumnae, Pennsylvania School Nurse's Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Association, Armstrong County Registered Nurses Association, and the Ford City Senior Citizens. She was also a member of the First Church of Ford City, formerly First Presbyterian Church, for over 70 years.
Claire is survived by a nephew, Stanley D. Schaffer, and his wife, Janice, of Arroyo Grande, CA, and a niece, Carole W. Schrecengost, and her husband, Larry, of Franklin. She is also survived by great-nieces, Pamela Acampora of Orcutt, CA, and Alyssa Emerson of San Luis Obispo, CA; and great-nephews, Stanley A. Schaffer of Fresno, CA, Mark Schrecengost of Santa Fe, NM, and Todd Schrecengost of Marion, OH. Also surviving are are great-great-nieces, Violet Emerson and Audrey Schaffer; and great-great-nephews, Owen Emerson and Mark S. Schrecengost and Mitchell and Gregory Acampora.
In addition to her parents, Claire was preceded in death by her sister, Jennie G. Schaffer, and her brothers, Stanley A., Woodrow W., and Frederick A. Schaffer.
Claire considered anyone who went to Ford City High School between 1948 and 1983 as "one of my students," regardless of their life successes. She was a great role model and inspiration to many students who ultimately became registered nurses. She was a regular guest and speaker at many, many class reunion dinners.
Friends will be welcomed from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday, May 16, 2013, in the WELCH FUNERAL HOME, 1032 Fourth Avenue, Ford City, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, May 17, 2013, with Pastor Corey Grywinski officiating. Interment will follow in Lawn Haven Burial Estates.
