James "Duke" Dillard, 97, of Ford City, died Monday, July 3, 2017, in ACMH Hospital.

Born March 22, 1920, in Alavista, VA, he was a son of the late Joseph C. and Dora (Melvin) Dillard.

He was a well-known track star in high school. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. Mr. Dillard was a past member and deacon of the Second Baptist Church, Ford City, which he also helped to build. He retired from P.P.G. Industries, Ford City, in 1983, after 43 years of service. He was a part-time police officer in Ford City, and also served with the Armstrong County Auxiliary Police.He enjoyed carpentry, flowers, cement work, electrical work, and vegetable gardening.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald (Shirley) Dillard of Ford City, and Mark (Sharon) Dillard of Butler; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Odessa Sheffey of Pittsburgh.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florine (Edwards) Dillard; a son, James Godfrey Dillard; brothers, Robert and Lesley Dillard; and sisters, Gladys Mae Roseman, Ethel Shavers, Mary Bell Jenkins, Hattie Sweatt, and Shirley Harvey.

Friends will be welcomed from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Friday, in the Welch Funeral Home, 1032 Fourth Ave., Ford City, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, with Rev. Kent Commodore, officiating. Interment will follow in Ford City Cemetery.

You have my deepest sympathy in the loss of your father and grandfather. I have known your parents for many years. Growing up in Ford City they were always kind and loving people. Duke will be missed. God Bless the family.

I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. I know how you are feeling. Sending hugs that the days well become somewhat easier. I just lost my Dad on the 21st of August. Again I'm so sorry.
