Roy S. Smathers, 93, of North Buffalo Township, left his earthly body and entered into God's Kingdom on Monday, August 21, 2017.

Born on June 25, 1924, in Whitesburg, Plumcreek Township, he was a son of the late William Clark and Mabel (Little) Smathers.

Roy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific, with the U.S. Naval Amphibious Forces. He also served in the Pennsylvania National Guard and the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.

Mr. Smathers was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Kittanning, where he was an elder. He worked at P.P.G. Industries, Eljer Plumbingware, and WTYM radio station.

He enjoyed spending his time in Fort Myers, FL, with his companion and love of 18 years, Eileen Keeler. Roy loved life to its fullest and it was evident by the smile that was always on his face.

Roy was a life member of the VFW Post 4843, Ford City, American Legion Posts 0598 and 0945. He was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Lodge, Coudersport, the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, Freeport Lodge #379, and Masonic Lodge #244, Kittanning.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Rowena O. (Bable) Smathers; a son, Scott Bryon Smathers; two daughters, Tammy Shawnee Smathers and Traci Renee Smathers; and siblings, Belle S. (Wilson) Smathers, Bernice B. Smathers, Shirley J. (Piper) Smathers, Reed Dalton Smathers, William Keith Smathers, Ronald Edward Smathers, and James W. Smathers.

He is survived by two daughters, Karen M. Bryson of Butler area, and Deborah S. Slagle (Thomas) of Kittanning; one granddaughter, Jennifer M. Galcik (Gabriel) of Saxonburg; four grandsons, Thomas M. Slagle of Kittanning, Christopher C. Slagle (Jessica) of Brackenridge, Tyler B. McGinnis, and Freddie Johns; and four great-granddaughters, Hanna, Brooke, Jenna, and Amita.

Friends will be welcomed from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, in the Welch Funeral Home, 10032 Fourth Ave., Ford City, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, with Rev. Dana Opt and Rev. John Snyder, co-officiating. Interment will follow in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at 6:45 p.m., Wednesday, in the funeral home. Debbie, Tommy & Christopher, I was saddened to her of the passing of Roy(Grandpa). I remember him always making everyone at church smile, especially me!! He was a great man & friend. May God be with you & ur family. RIP Roy! U will be greatly missed!!!
