Virginia Mae Smolen, 77, of Kittanning, died Sunday, January 7, 2018, in UPMC Magee Women's Hospital.

Born March 27, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Howard George and Irene Dorothy (Shearer) Hynick.

Virginia worked at the old Kittanning Hospital, and Armstrong County Health Center.  She also was a home health caregiver.

She attended St. John's Lutheran Church, Ford City.  Virginia belonged to the Silver Sneakers at the YMCA, and used to be a great bowler.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, crafting, and putting puzzles together.

She is survived by two children, Donna Jean Hill of Pittsburgh, and Thomas James Smolen (Kim), of Ford City; two grandchildren, Bethany Nicole Zents and Branden Michael Hill; a great-grandson, Zakk Thomas Zents; and her siblings, Leonard Hynick, Robert Hynick, Karen Beck, Frances Beere, Judith Forringer, Andrew Hynick, and George Hynick.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Joseph Smolen; and her in-laws, Stanley and Eva Smolen.

Friends will be welcomed from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, in the Welch Funeral Home, 1032 Fourth Ave., Ford City, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, with Rev.
